This book is the first national description of the history behind the Danish suburban streets and the gardens, the building societies and the garden cities, the apartment blocks and the non-detached town houses during the years from 1900 to 1960. Museum curator Peter Dragsbo has during 30 years studied urban planning and quarters of detached houses in 25 Danish towns. The result is this book, which seeks to answer the following questions:
- Who invented the modern urban planning?
- Do garden cities exist in Denmark?
- Why is it called “villa” and “detached house”?
- How did workers’ houses develop into social housing associations?
- Who created suburbia: The bourgeoisie class or the working class?
- Who won the battle for suburbia?
And: Why doesn’t anyone like suburbia today?
