The book tells how the small town of Dragør on the southern part of the island of Amager during the 18th century went through a development that changed the small group of houses into a thriving maritime town with an importance almost as big as the Danish capital Copenhagen. This development came despite The Great Northern War 1700-21, despite the plague epidemic of 1711 and despite local conflicts with the nearby Dutch settlement Store Magleby.
